Maintaining the rail network is a huge job. Our Maintenance Engineering team is up to the challenge. Across everything from signalling and track to electrification, they keep the network and its assets working safely and reliably. Strengthened and supported by all kinds of technical expertise, they are at the heart of our vision for engineering and operating excellence.
Directing a team of Senior Technical Officers, youll take the lead on everything from faulting to installation. Focusing on data analysis and quality control, youll ensure excellence and compliance.
As Principal Technical Officer for Electrification and Plant,
youll play a big part in ensuring our network always has the power it needs, whether its keeping signalling systems powered up or providing an electricity supply to the trains that run on our tracks.
About the role (External)
Youll provide important technical support and guidance to the Maintenance Engineering team. Its a varied and vital role, with responsibility for directing the work of our Senior Technical Officers. Youll be the first port of call for all kinds of issues, from installations to faulting. Prioritising work as it arises, and agreeing work plans, youll manage the preparation of work, resource specifications and requisitions for materials. Whats more, youll personally undertake and supervise a range of technical tasks, as well as survey and design work.
Youll carry out technical inspections and investigations, with a strong focus on data analysis and quality control. Youll install, test and commission equipment. And youll manage processes and systems for the calibration and certification of tools and equipment. Along the way, youll ensure works are fully compliant with our exacting standards, and keep a range of key records, systems and databases up to date.
- Experience of carrying out technical support activities, using diverse techniques
- Working knowledge spanning maintenance processes, systems and standards
- Knowledge of design requirements, processes and techniques
- Able to demonstrate, promote and embed safe working behaviours within the team
- Excellent communication skills, both in person and in writing
- Able to coach, influence and develop others
- Hold or be working towards and NVQ level 3 or 4 (or equivalent) in an engineering/leadership subject
- Able and willing to drive vehicles as required by business need
This role involves days, nights and weekend working, and is a safety critical role so subject to drug and alcohol testing and passing of the relevant medical assessment.

Grade: Band 8 £34,545 - £36,355 per annum - dependent on experience.
