A fantastic opportunity has arisen to join our Gaming tribe as Head of Engineering. You’ll report into the Director of Gaming Technology as part of Gaming Technology Leadership team, working with our Head of Delivery, Head of Operations, and Head of Architecture to collectively lead forward our technology function, and with a wide range of product and marketing stakeholders to continue our growth and on-going success story in the online gambling market.
What you will do…
The Gaming Tribe is responsible for a portfolio of online gaming products that entertain and delight our customers: SkyVegas, SkyCasino, SkyBingo and SkyPoker. These products are supported by 10 agile delivery squads across a wide engineering spectrum: from frontend focused React/Next.js teams building rich responsive web UIs, to backend focused teams using Golang, Nodejs or Kotlin to build high availability transactional or streaming systems. We’re looking for you to lead and support the most crucial members of our organisation -- the builders.
As the ideal candidate, you will have experience of leading multiple technical teams but not have lost touch with the creative art of engineering itself. Don’t worry if some of this technology is new to you, we value great people who are willing to get stuck in and learn: this role is about having the judgement to promote and action the right expert advice from your team at the right time, rather than always being that expert yourself.
As with all software engineering, the basics are clear: you will focus on ensuring your staff deliver high quality solutions that are sustainable, secure, testably safe, performant and scalable yet flexible and quickly extendable. This isn’t easy, so we help ourselves by choosing to target our in-house engineering expertise on our core domain of online gaming and build only when absolutely necessary. We lean heavily on a variety of AWS cloud services and other centralized internal teams that maintain supporting services like Kafka, Kubernetes, Prometheus. Choosing what not to let your team build is important too!

You will have a passion for cultivating an inclusive, collaborative and delivery focused working environment across the entirety of engineering, ensuring that knowledge, best practice, and innovative ideas are shared and you will continually champion and embody the SBG values whilst driving continuous improvements across all of our in-house systems.
How you will do it…
You will be a great direct manager to a mixture of Engineering Managers and Lead Engineers, with overall accountability for the team of approx 40-50 engineers that work on gaming systems.
You’ll demonstrate the ability to make firm decisions in challenging scenarios for the overall benefit of the Gaming Tribe.
You’ll be proud to represent the Tribe at forums outside of Gaming and will be able to influence decisions, communities and strategy across the business.
You will drive consistent high performance and engineering excellence from your own team, while also leading by example to display the flexibility and desire to solve the underlying problem at hand rather than use technology for it’s own sake.
You will attract and retain key talent and support your Engineering Managers & Lead Engineers in hiring and developing the best people.
You are responsible for the engineering SDLC, ways of working and key technical choices and engineering strategy. As an organization we favour an evidence-led approach, and you will need to judge wisely but not be afraid to experiment.
You will foster a vibrant engineering community ensuring that knowledge, best practice, and good ideas & head-earned learnings are shared so all teams may benefit.
Quality, Quality, Quality. We try and measure this, and you are responsible for ensuring an appropriate level of quality in the right places without wasteful over-engineering.
Be an information hub: not only within technology but also with a wider stakeholder group so you can explain, champion and inform.
You will ensure close alignment with the architecture function within
“Go Faster, Be Stable” (Service & Delivery)
Your product and delivery stakeholders (and our customers) will always want faster and more predictable feature delivery with a reduced on-going maintenance overhead.
Your service stakeholders will want a ‘stable’ service (we define this via error budgets), and continuous reduction in service, security or compliance risks.
You need to represent your engineers in the middle and working with these stakeholders help to co-ordinate this balance.
You will build forward from the existing baseline of a devops-inspired ‘you build it, you run it’ mindset of high quality operational insight, well-honed emergency response procedures, and a mature approach to risk management.
You will build forward from the existing baseline of a measured agile delivery process that uses track record data to improve future delivery.
