Job Description Summary Commercial Banking Litigation is part of the wider Group Litigation & Regulation Community. It supports Commercial Banking businesses within the Group in relation to litigation and certain contentious regulatory matters. The Commercial Banking Litigation team is looking for a new Lawyer to be based in any of their team locations (in London, Edinburgh or Bristol). The role offers the right candidate a unique opportunity to form part of a high performing in-house litigation team, which provides quality litigation and contentious regulatory advice and support to a diverse business area in relation to complex and high value matters.
The right candidate will have previous post-qualification litigation and some contentious regulatory experience in a City/commercial law firm, working in the banking and financial services sector. Prior in-house experience is desirable, but not essential.
The right candidate will have an opportunity to manage their own caseload within a supportive team environment. In conjunction with Senior Lawyers and Head of Commercial Banking Litigation, they will be responsible for all aspects of their caseload, including strategic case management, 360 degree stakeholder briefings, instructing and managing external panel law firms, escalating issues as appropriate, budgeting for legal spend on individual cases, and providing pro-active, pragmatic, and commercially aware advice on contentious matters at all stages of the disputes process to business colleagues.

An exciting opportunity currently exists within our in-house Commercial Banking Litigation Team, part of the wider Litigation and Contentious Regulatory community. We are looking for a lawyer to provide support on complex litigation matters, based in any of our team locations (London, Edinburgh or Bristol). The role offers the right candidate a unique opportunity to form part of a high performing litigation team.
Key responsibilities:
Join us and you will work collaboratively as part of a team, and in consultation with others, including Senior Lawyers, the Head of Commercial Banking Litigation and colleagues across the wider Legal Division.
Provision of pro-active, pragmatic and commercially aware legal advice and support across Commercial Banking in relation to complex contentious matters, on potential or actual disputes at all stages of the litigation process.
Business contact and liaison for delivering litigation support, strategic direction and risk mitigation strategies for Commercial Banking and other relevant stakeholders.
Provide support to business areas in identification and/or resolution of legal risk, both actual and horizon risk issues.
Legal representative in relevant business/divisional projects, supporting more senior members of the team or non-contentious lawyer colleagues as appropriate.
Ensure the provision of structure and quality control around the instruction and use of external panel firms to maximise value.
Contribute to the ongoing implementation of the Commercial Banking Litigation training programme.
Identify and develop protocols and guidance notes to improve the efficiency of litigation management across Commercial Banking.
Opportunity for some informal line management/supervisory responsibilities of more junior members of the team.
What we’ll need from you:
You’ll need a current legal practising certificate or equivalent as well as a professional legal qualification in a UK jurisdiction.
You will possess post qualification litigation experience in a commercial law firm in the banking/financial services sector with the added bonus of prior in-house experience desirable, but not essential.
Skills & knowledge Areas
You’ll need a sound appreciation of legal, technical, and procedural factors affecting contentious matters with an excellent understanding of dispute resolution, together with a sound appreciation of the regulatory frameworks dealing with lending to corporate customers and the relevant impact on banking/financial services.
