Job Description Summary Commercial Banking Litigation is part of the wider Group Litigation & Regulation Community. It supports Commercial Banking businesses within the Group in relation to litigation and certain contentious regulatory matters. The Commercial Banking Litigation team is looking for a Senior Lawyer to be based in any of their team locations (in London, Edinburgh or Bristol). The role offers the right candidate a unique opportunity to form part of a high performing in-house litigation team, which provides litigation and contentious regulatory advice and support to a diverse business area in relation to complex and high value matters.
The role is on a fixed term basis of 18 months.
The right candidate will have previous post-qualification litigation and some contentious regulatory experience in a City/commercial law firm, working in the banking and financial services sector. Prior in-house experience is desirable, but not essential.
The right candidate will have an opportunity to lead and supervise colleagues within scope of role, dealing with litigation and contentious regulatory matters, supporting the Commercial Banking business units within the Group. They will provide legal advice in relation to potential and actual litigation and certain contentious regulatory matters on a wide range of banking matters and related legal risk issues, to meet the commercial and strategic needs of the Commercial Banking division, whilst protecting the interests of the Group. The role will form part of the CB Litigation Management team reporting into the Head of Commercial Banking Litigation.

Join us and you will work collaboratively as part of a team, including the Head of Commercial Banking Litigation and colleagues across the wider Legal Division.
The role will form part of the Commercial Banking Litigation Management Team reporting into the Head of Commercial Banking Litigation and you’ll have the opportunity to lead and supervise colleagues within scope of role, managing and overseeing demanding workloads.
The role is on a fixed term basis of 18 months.
Your key accountabilities will include:
The provision of pro-active, pragmatic and commercially aware legal advice and support across Commercial Banking in relation to complex contentious matters, on potential or actual disputes at all stages of the litigation process.
Delivering influential insight to senior stakeholders and to the wider Legal Division by operating as a senior level functional specialist to meet the commercial and strategic needs of the Commercial Banking division, whilst protecting the interests of the Group.
Proactive and motivated approach to leading, directing, creating, executing, and managing legal and risk mitigation strategies to potential, and actual disputes.
Lead contentious legal representative in relevant business/divisional projects, working alongside non-contentious lawyer colleagues as appropriate.
Lead support to business areas in identification and/or resolution of legal risk, both actual and horizon risk issues.
Responsible for sourcing appropriate external legal advice and for selection, instruction and supervision of external law firms in line with approved legal firm panel processes to maximise value.
What we’ll need from you:
You’ll need a current legal practising certificate or equivalent as well as a professional legal qualification in a UK jurisdiction.
You will possess post qualification litigation experience in a commercial law firm in the banking/financial services sector with the added bonus of prior in-house experience desirable, but not essential.
Proven leadership capability in line managing more junior colleagues.
Skills & Knowledge Areas:
You’ll need a sound appreciation of legal, technical, and procedural factors affecting contentious matters with an excellent understanding of dispute resolution, together with a sound appreciation of the regulatory frameworks dealing with lending to corporate customers and the relevant impact on banking/financial services.
